Hunting Point bus routes – major service changes proposed (Routes 10A, 10B, 10E)

September 10th, 2013 11 comments

Routes 10A and 10E

Metro is proposing to implement one of the following options in order to provide better connections for residents of Hunting Point and downtown Alexandria to Rosslyn and Downtown DC, reduce travel time to Rosslyn and improve service reliability, and relieve peak period crowding on the Blue Line (option 2 would also relieve peak period overcrowding on the Orange Line).

Option 1: Route 10E would terminate at the Pentagon and a re-routed 10A (renamed 10R.) would replace the peak period service to Rosslyn. The 10R would not serve the Pentagon and would continue to Rosslyn via 23rd Street, Eads Street, 18th Street, Crystal Drive to serve the Crystal City VRE Station, 15th Street, Jefferson Davis Highway, and Wilson Boulevard to Rosslyn station.

Option 2: Route 10E would terminate at the Pentagon.  An extension of the 10A peak period service (renamed 10Y) would provide service to Downtown DC via Rosslyn. The 10Y would not serve the Pentagon and would continue to Downtown DC via 23rd Street, Eads Street, 18th Street, Crystal Drive to serve the Crystal City VRE Station,  15th Street,  Jefferson Davis Highway, Wilson Boulevard, Rosslyn station, Lynn Street, Lee Highway/I-66, Roosevelt Bridge, E Street Expressway, 18th Northbound and 19th Street Southbound, and K Street to Farragut Square

Route 10B

Currently, the 10B runs from Hunting Point to the Ballston-MU Metrorail station.  Metro is proposing to implement one of the following service change options:

Option 1: From South Glebe Road and Walter Reed Drive, rerouted Route 10B via Walter Reed Drive, Arlington Mill Drive, Randolph Street to Shirlington Transit Center, then continue via Quincy Street, Arlington Mill Drive, Shirlington Road, 24th Road South and South Glebe Road to the intersection of Mt. Vernon Avenue.

Option 2: Route 10B would be rerouted from Arna Valley (26th Road South, Adams Street, 26th Street South, 28th Street South, Meade Street) to operate via South Glebe Road between West Glebe Road and Mt. Vernon Avenue.

In both options the 10B will be rerouted from Walter Reed Drive and 2nd Street South to South Glebe Road between 2nd Street South and Walter Reed Drive.

The map below illustrates the changes proposed. Please review and let us know what you think.  We will also be presenting these options at our upcoming public hearings.

Major service change proposed for Route 4A

September 9th, 2013 2 comments

Earlier this year Metro completed a comprehensive service evaluation study of Routes 4A, 4B, 4E, 4H.  Metro is proposing to implement one of the changes recommended in this study.  Currently, Route 4A runs from Culmore to the Rosslyn Metrorail station. Under the proposed service change, the Culmore to Seven Corners segment of this route would be eliminated and replaced by a new Route 26A.  The proposed 26A would serve Northern Virginia Community College (Annandale campus), Annandale, Culmore, Seven Corners Transit Center, and East Falls Church Metrorail station.

The maps below illustrates the changes proposed. Please review and let us know what you think.  We will also be presenting these options at our upcoming public hearings.

Major changes proposed for Route 5A to Dulles Airport

September 2nd, 2013 14 comments

As part of the opening of Phase 1 of the Silver Line, the District Department of Transportation has requested that Metro investigate the possibility of discontinuing Route 5A which currently serves Dulles Airport via L’Enfant Plaza, Rosslyn, and Herndon-Monroe Park & Ride.   Under this proposal, the 5A would be discontinued in June, 2014 (several months after the Silver Line opens).  Passengers wishing to travel to Dulles Airport would be able to take the Silver Line to the Wiehle-Reston East station and then transfer to the Fairfax Connector 981 bus.

  • Travel times on the 5A currently range between 50 and 65 minutes from L’Enfant Plaza to Dulles and 45 to 70 minutes between Dulles and L’Enfant Plaza.
  • Travel time on the Silver Line between L’Enfant Plaza and Wiehle-Reston East is anticipated to be approximately 45 minutes.
  • The Fairfax Connector 981 will run every 20 minutes weekdays and Saturdays and every 40 minutes on Sundays.
  • The current fare on the 5A is $6.00.  For passengers taking the Silver Line from stations east of Foggy Bottom, the fare to Wiehle-Reston East will be $5.75 plus a $1.10 transfer fare on the Fairfax Connector.  (Fares are based on use of a SmarTrip card.)

In addition to the option above, Metro is also considering the following options:

Option 2 – Shorten the 5A to run between Dulles Airport and Wiehle-Reston East station

Option 3 – Only operate Route 5A before opening and after closing of Metrorail service on weekdays and/or weekends

The maps below illustrates the changes proposed. Please review and let us know what you think.  We will also be presenting these options at our upcoming public hearings.

Restructuring bus service in Bowie, MD

August 29th, 2013 3 comments

Earlier this year Metro conducted a comprehensive service evaluation study of the bus routes serving Bowie, MD.  Metro is currently looking at implementing some of the recommendations that emerged from the study.  Three options are under consideration:

Option 1: Instead of operating to New Carrollton Station, all service on the B21, B22, B29 and C28 routes would terminate at the Bowie Park & Ride lot.  To reach the New Carrollton Station, riders on these routes would connect with a new shuttle service at the Bowie Park & Ride lot. The shuttle service would travel via John Hanson Highway and operate every 10-15 minutes.

Option 2: Routes B21, B22, B29 would continue to operate through the Bowie Park & Ride lot to New Carrollton Station. The frequency on each route would increase during rush hours to an even 30 minutes. Schedules would be coordinated between the three routes at the Bowie Park & Ride lot to provide a 10 minute service frequency to and from the New Carrollton Station.

Option 3: This option is the same as Option 2 but would also eliminate service to the Crofton Park & Ride lot on B29.  This route would, instead, serve the Bowie Health Center, Bowie Senior Center, Bowie Town Center, and Gateway Center.  B31 trips would also be converted to B29 trips.

The maps below illustrates the changes proposed. Please review and let us know what you think.  We will also be presenting these options at our upcoming public hearings.

Pershing Drive – Arlington Boulevard Line (Route 4A, B, E, H) Study Completed

August 21st, 2013 Comments off

4 Line PhotoMetrobus in cooperation with Arlington County and Fairfax County recently completed a seven month long Service Evaluation Study (SES) for the Pershing Drive – Arlington Boulevard Line (Route 4A,B,E,H). The line serves Rosslyn, Arlington Boulevard and Pershing Drive, terminating at Seven Corners and Culmore.

The goals of the Service Evaluation Study are to:

1) Review the capacity, productivity, reliability, and quality of the service;

2) Identify the needs for facilities along the line and

3) Recommend changes to improve service delivery.

The study team reviewed existing operational and traffic conditions along the line, and then conducted a riders survey and a public outreach effort, using one focus group and two public meetings, to gain input from riders. After assessing all the available data and rider inputs, service recommendations were proposed for:

  • Service Hours
  • Frequency
  • Reliability
  • New Limited Stop Service
  • Route Simplicity
  • Bus Stop Distance and Amenities
  • Traffic Operations

Metrobus Public Meeting for Martin Luther King Jr. Highway Line (Route A11 & A12)

August 20th, 2013 Comments off

A12The Martin Luther King Jr. Highway Line (consisting of routes A11 and A12) is one of the busiest Metrobus lines in Prince George’s County. The line provides service from Capital Plaza to Addison Road Metro Rail Station via Landover Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Highway. On an average weekday, this route has nearly 3,000 riders. On-time performance (OTP) is generally good, averaging more than 80% for the past year.

Metro Bus Planning initiated a study of this line in June 2013, looking to improve service and efficiency.  Some of the issues identified so far include:

  • Route directness and convenience
  • Low frequency of service during peak periods on weekdays and on weekends
  • Peak period traffic congestion problems along sections of Landover Road and Martin Luther King Jr Highway
  • Survey indicated that riders require more late night and weekend services, more frequency and better reliability
  • Too many bus stops too close together
  • Missing bus stop amenities

Metro will also host a public meeting to discuss the findings as well as the preliminary service improvement proposals.

The meeting will be open house style so you can drop by anytime.  Metro Planners and project staff will be on hand to speak one-on-one with participants and get feedback about potential options for service improvement. Please also give us your comments below and/or complete the survey available online.  For further information, check metrobus-studies.com. Read more…

The lines meet Metro’s ridership and productivity thresholds.

Some of the issues identified in the existing conditions report include:

  • Route directness and convenience
  • On-time performance for the 10B on Saturday afternoons
  • Traffic congestion problems at Mount Vernon Avenue on Saturdays
  • Survey indicated that the main issues for riders are service frequency and reliability
  • Too many bus stops too close together
  • Missing bus stop amenities
