The Harry Davis, Jr. Metro Transit Police District II Police Station and Range Training Facility at Franconia-Springfield have both been officially awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

From inception the project targeted the environmental requirements for LEED certification. However, when construction began in 2013 the process to deliver the necessary credits and provide documented evidence of performance to USGBC began in earnest.

The three-story District II police station is located one quarter mile from the Franconia-Springfield Metrorail station. Adjacent to the police station is the 33,000-square-foot range training facility featuring two separate firing ranges with twelve lanes each. Both facilities are constructed to be 30% more energy efficient than a typical building and feature light-colored “cool” roof materials to reflect heat. The range training facility features a heat and energy recovery system that increases energy efficiency. The system recovers energy from the exhausted air and provides both humidity and temperature control inside the range. Both facilities also incorporate water-efficient fixtures reducing potable-water consumption by 35% compared to a baseline building.

Operational since early 2015, this confirmation of LEED Silver status demonstrates Metro’s commitment to it’s Sustainability Initiative. The District II police station and range training facility will support to Metro Transit Police operations for decades to come.
