Major changes coming to Metrobus routes 10A, 10B, 10E, and 9E on March 30

March 26th, 2014

Last fall we let you know about changes we proposed on the bus routes serving Hunting Point and the Mount Vernon Avenue/Jefferson Davis Highway corridor.  We developed the original proposal based on recommendations that emerged from a comprehensive study conducted on Routes 10A, 10B, and 10E in 2013.  In the weeks leading up to our September public hearings as well as in oral and written testimony given at those hearings we received numerous comments and opinions on the options we presented.  We incorporated that feedback into an adjusted proposal and presented it to Metro’s Board of Directors for approval.

On Sunday, March 30, 2014, Metro will implement these changes that will impact Metrobus routes 9E, 10A, and 10E.  We believe riders will benefit from faster travel times and improved connections between Alexandria, Crystal City and Rosslyn.

What these changes mean for you:

Route 10A riders:
During the a.m. peak period northbound (from Hunting Point) and the p.m. peak period southbound (to Hunting Point), Route 10R will replace 10A service. Route 10R will provide a direct connection between Crystal City and Rosslyn bypassing the Pentagon. Existing 10A passengers traveling to the Pentagon may take a Route 10E bus or transfer to Metrorail at Braddock Road Station. These changes do not impact off-peak, weekend, a.m. peak period southbound (from the Pentagon) or p.m. peak period northbound (to the Pentagon) 10A service.

Route 10B riders:
Route 10B will no longer serve stops on 26th St, Adams St, 28th St, or Meade St.  ART routes 84 and 87 will continue to serve these stops.  Route 10B will be rerouted to run along South Glebe and West Glebe through Arna Valley along the same alignment as Route 23A.

Route 10E riders:
Service will operate between Braddock Road and Pentagon stations only. Passengers traveling between Crystal City and Rosslyn may board a Route 10R bus or transfer to Metrorail at the Pentagon. The weekday peak period schedule will be adjusted to provide a 15 minute time between buses.

Route 9E riders:
Route 10S service will replace all 9E service. Route 10S buses will not serve Pentagon Station. Route 9E riders traveling to the Pentagon may transfer to a Route 9A bus on Eads Street, or transfer to a Route 10E bus or Metrorail at Braddock Road Station.

NEW Routes 10R and 10S
Service will operate weekday peak periods between Rosslyn, Crystal City and Alexandria. Routes 10R and 10S will bypass the Pentagon, saving passengers approximately 10 minutes of travel time between Crystal City and Rosslyn. Route 10A and 10E buses will continue to serve Pentagon Station.

  • Route 10R will operate northbound from Hunting Point to Rosslyn via Crystal City during the morning peak period and southbound from Rosslyn to Hunting Point via Crystal City during the afternoon peak period.
  • Route 10S will operate southbound from Rosslyn to Braddock Road Station during the morning peak period and northbound from Braddock Road Station to Rosslyn during the afternoon peak period.

Thank you for not re-routing the 10B line away from Walter Reed Drive! Unless the ART buses start to run on Sundays as well as Saturdays, removing that line will seriously affect local residents (who board and alight in significant numbers at Columbia Pike and Walter Reed Drive).

As a resident along S. Second St, I was really looking forward to the day the 10B stopped running up and down the street. Will that change not be implemented now?
